Executive Coaching & Career Management: How Does It Work?

An executive coach providing feedback to a business leader.Over the years of my executive coaching experience, I have worked with leaders and executives on developing and implementing a career plan that will enable them to meet both their personal and career goals.

Why Is This Important?

  1. Your career is part of your life. Your career will enable you to meet your personal goals
  2. Over the past few years, we have all learned that there is an increasing blur between our personal and professional lives, and we’ve learned that by managing our career and work life, we can have the flexibility to enjoy more personal time.

Typically, executives engage me as an Executive Coach to assist them to achieve a number of goals which may include career goals as well as professional goals such as greater effectiveness, managing stakeholders (including board relationships), and leading more effectively.

Additionally, I am often engaged to work with them as a “confidante” – that person who can provide a shoulder and allow them to develop clarity as to how best to manage situations.

The lines blur.

Work impacts personal on so many levels.

Career management will often suffer as a result of other elements not being clear, and vice versa.

At this time of the year, we tend to set ourselves some goals, perhaps reflecting on those things that aren’t working so well for us and that we want to change.

From experience, executives will come to me when they’ve tried to make changes that they haven’t been able – “because other things got in the way”.

As a Master’s degree qualified Executive Coach, with significant continuing professional development and experience in coaching psychology, career management, and business advisory, I work with Executives to help them achieve greatness: professionally and personally.

Sometimes we can’t get out of our own way to do what we know will help us.

Accountability matters – as does the ability to gain clarity to enable our decisions to be the right ones. This is where engaging a coach can really help.

Career management for executives includes elements of the following:

  1. Ensuring you’re seen as a strong leader and working on your “leadership reputation”.
  2. Developing and managing your “executive presence”.
  3. Developing a networking strategy that minimizes the time spent for maximum results.
  4. Having a “Plan B” for when you need it.
